Mercedes Master Cylinder

Push it to the limit with the Mercedes Brake Master Cylinder

The Mercedes Brake Master Cylinder supplies pressure specifically to the pistons that pushes the brake pads for a more tight gripping on the brake rotor.

Efficient braking is the main purpose of the Mercedes master cylinder. This cylinder is the main hydraulic component that contains the hydraulic braking fluid. The force exerted by the foot on the brake pedal is amplified several times to exert enough brake force on the brake disc or brake drum. This force amplification is also known as mechanical advantage. In principle, this process is similar to the operation of the lever. In simple machines such as a lever, the resistance or weight is carried by a fulcrum in order for the input force to be effective.

In the case of the Mercedes brake system, the hydraulic fluid in the Mercedes master cylinder acts as the fulcrum that carries the resistance or weight. Since hydraulic fluid cannot be compressed, it has the tendency to seek exits to release pressure. As you step on the brake pedal, force is exerted on the brake fluid (oil) inside the Mercedes brake master cylinder. The force exerted by your foot is translated into fluid pressure. The brake fluid then flows through slave cylinders. These slave cylinders have pistons that operate the brake calipers or brake shoes.

The master cylinder has the redundancy of having two hydraulic fluid reservoir and two pistons. This redundancy prevents failure in braking. As you press down on the brake pedal, the primary piston exerts force on the brake fluid that results in the buildup of pressure. On the other hand, a valve releases the brake fluid from the reservoir. This further increases the buildup of hydraulic pressure.

As the pressure increases in the circuit of the primary piston, pressure also buildup in the circuit of the secondary piston. The secondary piston exerts force on the hydraulic fluid. The combined hydraulic pressures from both primary and secondary circuit magnify the force exerted by your foot on the brake pedal.
